Dale R. Bergdahl, Woodworking Artisan |
|
About: During my tenure of 29 years at the University of Vermont, I was involved with research, teaching, and outreach relative to forest health issues, especially, those caused by insects and diseases. Many of these causal agents were considered to be invasive exotics capable of causing extensive tree mortality in our natural and urban forests throughout North America as well as in other parts of the world. Over the years, I have had ample opportunity to dissect diseased trees and to examine the wood inside and found it to be amazingly unique and interesting in character. I now have the opportunity to show the unique characteristics of that pathological wood (“CharacterWood”) by turning it into different art forms.
Services/Products Offered: “CharacterWood” turned products: Lamps, Bowls, Bottle Stoppers, Candle Holders, Vases, and More. Price Range: $35 to $1,500 + Experience: Research and teaching for 29 years at the University of Vermont specializing in Forest Pathology (Research focus: both native and invasive exotic organisms). Currently consulting on forest and urban tree health problems; locally, nationally, and internationally. Experienced wood turner that primarily uses wood recovered from trees destroyed by a variety of pathogenic agents. This unusual wood, sometimes referred to as Character Wood, has unusual grain and color patterns that are exposed during the turning process. No turnings will ever be exactly the same with respect to their character markings. See photos for details.
